Training Curriculum

This program uses a mix of interactive discussion, case studies, and facilitated training to go through all the critical components of program design and grant management.

Designed to be flexible and accommodating to your team’s needs, it can be done in a one-week intensive format or spread out over time, and can be conducted in person or remotely. Based on an initial assessment of your organization’s existing capabilities and gaps, we tailor the curriculum to concentrate on the areas that are most important to your team.

Module 1: Program Strategy and Design

You’ll learn how to:

  • Conduct research and landscaping to identify systemic issues within a geography
  • Develop an effective theory of change
  • Create effective strategies for grant-making programs
  • Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Incorporate participative involvement of local stakeholders

Tools and templates provided:

  • Problem tree, solution tree, and results chain templates
  • Program strategy template

  • Source and determine a short list of potential grantees
  • Construct a grant portfolio and foster collaboration among grantees (if applicable)

  • Grant application materials, including narrative, benchmark, and budget documents

Module 3: Partner Selection and Due Diligence

You’ll learn how to:

  • Qualify grantees
  • Assess organizational and programmatic strengths and risks
  • Gauge portfolio and grant risk and understand best practices for risk mitigation
  • Structure partnership agreements
  • Develop and refine benchmarks to understand the impact of each grant and across a portfolio of grants
