Education for Internally Displaced Persons

October 26, 2021

Geneva Global first worked with children from IDP communities in Oromia, Ethiopia in 2019, quickly establishing Speed School classes to accommodate a new influx of children.  Drawn to the special relevance of the accelerated education model for internally displaced communities, UNICEF contracted Geneva Global to operate a one-year Speed School program for more IDP communities in Oromia and then joined with Education Cannot Wait to contract Geneva Global to implement a three-year effort for a larger IDP education effort.  We have embraced this challenge enthusiastically, stretching our core model to cover more purposefully such aspects as mental health and psychosocial support, the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, peace education, and inclusion for children with disabilities.  The new IDP projects have also engaged us and our partners in the construction of semi-permanent classroom structures and the provision of WASH infrastructure.
